Step 1: Scoop the Paint

Scoop up the excess paint on the carpet by using a spoon or dull knife and carefully extracting it. For the small amounts of paint that you cannot remove using this way, get a clean sponge or a white cloth and then blot the paint spill until you are able to remove as much of it from the carpet.

Step 2: Use Alcohol

Next thing that you will need to do is to apply some rubbing alcohol on the stain. Use isopropyl alcohol and see first if it will damage your carpet. Test it out by adding a drop or two in an inconspicuous part of the carpet. If it does not harm your carpet then you are good to go. Dip a clean white cloth in some rubbing alcohol and then dab the paint stain with it. Do this for several seconds, slightly adding some pressure as you are doing so.

Step 3: Use Dry Cleaning Solvent

If after doing this the oil-based paint still remains, get some dry cleaning solvent and apply it on an absorbent pad and then apply it onto the stain. Make sure you try it out again before using it as you don’t want to damage your carpet accidentally. Put a heavy book on top of the absorbent pad and then let it set for about thirty minutes. If after doing that some of the stain still remains, apply some more solvent onto the pad and then blot the area until you are able to remove it.

Step 4: Rinse the Carpet

Rinse the carpet with water to help eliminate any residue that you could leave behind. Dry it using a clean rag or towel and then you’re done.
