“They did a great job cleaning 3 hard-to-clean hand-made wool rugs from the Middle East. They even got urine stains out. They were also very courteous and easy to work with both over the phone and via email. I highly recommend this business!”

Our 9-Step Eco-Friendly Purified Water Rug Washing Process
Our proven 9-step rug cleaning process employs the simple element of purified water to deliver an extremely thorough, yet gentle rug cleaning. This approach produces the most extensive cleaning for your treasured investment.
1: Free Rug Pickup & Pre-Inspection
We will come to your location to pick up your Oriental and area rug, or you may drop it off at our rug cleaning plant. Our Master Rug Cleaner will do a thorough pre-inspection with you to evaluate the age of the rug, how much wear and fading the rug shows, the materials used to construct the rug, and the overall condition. Our Master Rug Cleaner will then go over the best cleaning options, recommended repairs, and expectations based on their inspection.
Did you know that a wool rug can hold four times its weight in dirt? That’s why this step is so important. Using a variety of dry soil removal techniques, including compressed air, special vacuum attachments and a pile lifter, we make sure to loosen and remove as much embedded soil from your rugs as possible, including dust, dirt, pet hair and other abrasives.
3: Preparation & Pre-Spotting
Depending on your rug’s fiber content and level of soiling, the rug and fringe will be pre-treated to start loosening the soils within the rug. Any potentially difficult spots, stains, or pet urine sites will be pre-treated with eco-friendly WoolSafe solutions to maximize their removal.
4: Purified Water Submersion Hand-Washing
Our submersion handwashing simulates the age-old cleaning process of submerging the rug for hours in flowing rivers, enabling all foreign matter to be purged from an area rug. A continuous flow of purified water, combined with a mild WoolSafe pH-neutral cleaning solution, further removes contaminants and prevents them from settling back into the rug again. Rugs with particularly stubborn contaminants and odors, such as smoke and pet odors, are submerged for an extended period of time to ensure their complete removal. Each rug is washed individually to avoid cross-contamination and dye transfer from other rugs.
5: Centrifuge Rug-Wringer
Our centrifuge rug-wringer uses a combination of centrifugal force, effective chemistry, and purified water irrigation, so contaminants are thoroughly flushed out. The force of this equipment is able to remove 90% of moisture from your rug in less than 3 minutes!
6: Controlled Heat Drying
Your rugs finish drying in our heat-controlled drying room, where they spend the next eight to twelve hours to thoroughly dry. Once the rug is completely dry, it is combed with soft groomers made for fine rugs to stand the pile in the same direction.
7: Post Detailing – Repairs, Pad & Wrapping
When the rug has finished the drying cycle, it is then off to be “finished”. This is where the rug’s fringe will be detailed using a specialty brush, repairs will be made, and any other add-ons that you may have selected will be completed. If you purchased a custom rug pad or Tyvek rug wrap, it will be cut specifically for your rug during this step.
8: Post-Cleaning Inspection
Our certified Master Rug Cleaner will meticulously inspect the finished rug to make sure it looks its best. If the Master Rug Cleaner feels that the area rug has not yet reached the best it can possibly be, your rug will be sent through the full cleaning process once more. Once the rug passes the final inspection, it will be released for pickup or delivery.
9: Final Touch & Delivery
Once your rug has been cleared by our Master Rug Cleaner, our Triple-Plus+ encapsulation disinfectant, deodorizer, and stain protector will then be applied to the rug. This plant-based product forms a microscopic barrier around each fiber to enhance vacuuming and add extended soil repellency and stain protection. Once the Triple-Plus+ has been applied, a CLEAN Choice team member will contact you to schedule your delivery or a time for you to pick up the area rug from our facility.
Why Clean Rugs In-Plant With CLEAN Choice Cleaning & Restoration?
In order to maintain their value, quality, and structural integrity, your Oriental and area rugs should be cleaned in-plant on a regular basis to remove dirt and other abrasives that wear down rug fibers. In-plant submersion cleaning allows your entire rug to be cleaned - from the top to the bottom and everything in between, making it the best cleaning for area and Oriental rugs. Submersion rug cleaning allows the fibers to be thoroughly cleaned instead of just having the dirt knocked off the surface.
At CLEAN Choice Cleaning & Restoration, we clean each rug individually to avoid cross-contamination with other rugs. Call our team at (410) 995-9898 or book our service online today.
“Great job cleaning all 3 rugs, but especially pleased with my 30-year-old oriental. That rug had survived 4 Labradors in 30 years, and now smells as good as new! Thank you!”

Area & Oriental Rug Cleaning FAQ's
What Types of Rugs Do You Clean?
We clean just about any rug you can think of. Whether it’s a treasured family heirloom or a mass-produced one that you picked up at the store, you can trust our team to provide the best possible cleaning. We specialize in cleaning the following types of rugs: Oriental, Persian, Karastan, Chinese, tribal, Turkish, Indian, Pakistani, kilims, dhurries, flokati; shag, handmade, handwoven, machine-made, tufted, hand-tufted, braided, hand-hooked, flat-weave, tapestries, needlepoints; wool, natural fiber, synthetic, wool / silk blended, olefin, polypropylene, cotton, viscose, silk, cowhide, and more!
How Do You Clean Area Rugs?
At our state-of-the-art facility, we expertly clean the finest Oriental and area rugs. Your area rug is first inspected for special conditions or damage. We then remove as much dry soil as possible before putting the rug into a submersion water bath. Your rug is then hand-washed to remove as much dirt and debris as possible from the fibers.
Once the rug has been thoroughly cleaned, it is then put in our rug-wringer to remove 90% of moisture within a matter of minutes. The rug is then taken to our drying room, where it will complete drying. Finally, it is taken to our master rug cleaner for inspection and post detailing, including fringe work, repairs, custom-cut pads, and Tyvek rug wrapping.
What Products Do You Use to Clean Area & Oriental Rugs?
All of our products are eco-friendly and non-toxic. The products used specifically for area rug cleaning are all CRI, IICRC and WoolSafe certified. We also have several products specific to the different materials used to construct your rug and to treat specific stains. We only use the safest and most quality products when handling your valued rugs.
How Often Should Rugs Be Cleaned?
Depending on use and how much traffic your rugs see, they should be cleaned every 6-12 months for higher-traffic rugs or every 2-3 years for rugs that are not as heavily used. Light-colored rugs or rugs made from soil-resistant fibers, such as silk, may require more frequent cleaning. If you’re not sure if it’s time to bring your rug in, here’s a good way to tell — if it still looks soiled after vacuuming, it’s time to have it professionally cleaned.
What Is The Difference Between In-Home & In-Plant Cleaning?
In-plant cleaning is the safest and most recommended method to clean fine area and Oriental rugs. With in-plant cleaning, we can completely submerge the area rug to remove as much dirt and debris as possible from the pile. In-plant cleaning is a much more thorough cleaning as we are able to soak and clean the entire rug from top to bottom and everything in-between.
How Long Does It Take to Clean Rugs?
It typically takes two weeks from start to finish when having your area and Oriental rugs cleaned in-plant. Extra time may be needed if you have opted to have repairs made to your rug. Our Master Rug Cleaner will provide you with a more accurate timeline after he has completed his initial inspection. If you need your rugs back by a specific date, please let our office staff know at the time of scheduling so we can attempt to meet your timeframe.
Can You Pick Up Rugs from My Home?
Yes. We offer free pickup and delivery for area rugs within our service area. Just call our office to schedule a time.
Can I Bring My Rugs to Your Location?
Yes! We even offer an extra 10% off for bringing your rugs to us. Our office is conveniently located just off of Route 1 and 100, at 7391 Washington Blvd. Suite #105, Elkridge MD 21075. We’ll even help you unload the rugs from your vehicle. Just give us a call to let us know you’re coming and we’ll be ready to help.
Can You Tell My How Much My Rug is Worth?
We offer informal verbal appraisals, or opinions of value, at no charge. If you would like a formal written appraisal, there is a fee depending on how many rugs are to be assessed and appraised. Please contact our office for more details and pricing.
Can You Remove Pet Urine & Stains from Rugs?
Yes. With our in-plant area rug cleaning facility, we are often able to remove all or most of the urine from your rugs. We submerge the rugs in a water bath to allow water to flow freely through the fibers and remove as much urine as possible. In some instances, such as tufted rugs, we are not able to fully remove the urine and / or odor, as it is likely in the glue that holds the backing to the rug fibers. In this case, we recommend having the backing and glue removed and replaced. Call for more information and pricing.
Can You Remove Wine Stains from My Rug?
In most cases, yes. Wine stains can be tricky to remove from any surface, but with full submersion, we are able to remove the majority of the stain. If submersion cleaning alone does not work as well as we would like, we will use products specifically designed for these stains. In some cases, stripping or dyeing may be the best option for optimal removal. We will do our best to get the stain out as much as possible without removing the natural dyes of the fibers.
My Tufted Rug Has an Odor. Will Cleaning Resolve That?
In most cases, yes, but depending on the severity, more aggressive measures may need to be taken. Odors related to soiling and / or urine will be removed when the source is removed, but with tufted rugs, the source can actually be the adhesive backing. Cleaning alone will not remove any odors trapped in or caused by the breakdown of the adhesive backing. The only way to ensure full odor removal is to remove the existing backing and glue and replace it with new. Our Master Rug Cleaner can go over this option and pricing at the time of pickup or drop-off.
Can You Treat my Rug for Moths / Moth Damage?
We can safely treat your rug for moth infestation and kill any lingering eggs and bacteria. Your rug will be treated with a specially designed moth disinfectant before and after the cleaning process to ensure all moth larvae and waste has been thoroughly killed and removed from your rug. If damage has occurred from the moth infestation, our Master Rug Cleaner will go over your repair options with you.
Can You Remove Dry Rot / Mold from My Rug?
In some cases, we are able to remove dry rot and mold from your area and Oriental rugs. Depending on the severity and length of time the dry rot or mold has been a problem, we can suggest the best course of action.
